If Roche stood still, then Pena obviously tagged him BEFORE he touched 2nd base, which makes Roche out because Torres was entitled to it under Rule 7.03:

"Two runners may not occupy a base, but if, while the ball is alive, two runners are touching a base, the following runner shall be out when tagged. The preceding runner is entitled to the base."

Interestingly, it appears that the umpire may have made the wrong call. Under 6.05(l):

[The batter is out when...] An infielder intentionally drops a fair fly ball or line drive, with first, first and second, first and third, or first, second and third base occupied before two are out. The ball is dead and runner or runners shall return to their original base or bases.
Exception: The batter is not out if the infielder permits the ball to drop untouched (italics added) to the ground, except when the Infield Fly rule applies.

Apparently, the umpires felt the drop was not intentional; in either case, it was a heads-up play by Pena.Wooden U. If Roche is standing on second then the force is on the runner coming from 1st, the tag applied to THAT runner was redundant, the throw to 1st being the second out getting the batter.
I couldn't see my way clear to box-scoring the play and coming up with three outs.
Unless they claim Roche was tagged, off second base,I can't come up with 3.

Free tix today if You turn in your ticket from last night's game.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13039824.post-48790247034060843062007-08-05T10:06:00.000-04:002007-08-05T10:06:00.000-04:00More importantly, kids, the Spirit have tied the J...More importantly, kids, the Spirit have tied the Jackals for the best overall record. Since dropping to two games below .500 (14-16) on June 26, this team has gone 25-10, twice winning six in a row (6/27-7/2, 7/14-21) and losing consecutive games just twice (7/4-DH, 7/6; 7/29-DH)Wooden U.
