Spirit Lose Heartbreaker; More Nails Lost

The blog's regular conntributor Joe is having trouble getting home at the moment...but is on his way home after a heartbreaking 9-6 loss against the Jackals of the Sewer State. He asked me to write up the report tonight.....but I'd like to get some sleep so I'm gonna cheat and put up the recap from the official North Shore Spirit website and add a few side-thoughts:

By Reid Cargan,SPIRIT Baseball Writer
LYNN,MA (SV)

"Sandy Madera hit a grand slam off Derek Drage to cap off a seven run ninth inning as the Jackals storm back from four runs down to shock the Spirit 9-6 Tuesday night at Fraser field in game one of their series.

It was a battle of the lefties for the first four innings as Luis Arroyo and Josh Brey held their counterparts scoreless. Then with two outs in the top of the fifth, Joe Mihalics singles and promptly stole second. Clay Kuklick hit what appeared to be the final out, but the fly ball tipped of Mike Torres’ glove and dropped in allowing Mihalics to score. New Jersey took further advantage of the error by scoring another run in the frame on a Francisco Leandro base hit to up the score to 2-0.

The Spirit struck for five in the sixth inning to overtake the Jackals. Mike Torres and Luis Lopez both with 2 RBI’s in the frame on a single and double respectively. Jerson Perez chipped in an RBI single as well that scored Lopez from second. The Spirit bullpen cruised through the seventh and eighth innings before Donny Langdon and Jamie Baker imploded in the ninth inning, all culminating in the Madera slam. New Jersey banged out five hits with two walks in the frame. The Jackals gave the Spirit a taste of their own medicine after the Spirit had strung together a few come from behind victories as of late.

Kyle George (2-3) picks up the win in relief, with newcomer Tom Atlee picking up his first save as a member of the Jackals. Drage takes the loss, moving his record to 3-4 on the season.

The two teams lock up again Wednesday night at 7:05. Gary Galvez will oppose Kevin Ool."

NOW...for my mini-rant and thoughts (I know Joe would've loved to do this in the main post XD):
First off may I start by askign the following questions.....Why can;t we seem to win at home, especially latye in the season? AND Why do we always have closer problems late in the season? NOW-we move on....

**Luis Arroyo did phneominal in his outing. His pitching line was 6 innings pitched with 4 hits and 2 un-earned runs (an E7) while stiking out 1 and walking 2.
** I liked the idea of,after Arroyo left, trying to use one pitcher per inning.....worked to a point ;]
** Fraser Field is porbably the only place that can go from active in the 6th to being a carbon copy of Pine Grove Cemetary when sound is NEEDED!!!! UGH!
** I hate how an usher told us to quiet down and then said "It';s only the Spirit" when we were cheering in the 9th....LIKE REAL FANS DO!
** Carl Schaefer is sick!!! He has some VERY good stuff. Maybe we should've kept him in a little later...
** Derek Gange shouldn't have gone in THAT late in the game (the 9th inning).....he's been bad lately, and doing that was suicide. Next time put him in earlier......this isn't helping him or the team at this point.
** Walking Fransisco Leandro (who?) to get to Sandy Madera (top league hitter) was a HORRIBLE discission! ALL of us agreed.....cause then what happened? BOOM! Grand Salami....just like Joe predicted and everyone thought might happpen.
** Why leave in Drage after doign badly and then giving up a grand slam?! Vic....stop being like JK,it's giving us heart problems.
** Vic.......make Carl Schaefer the closer--NOW! ^_^

ALSO: The press box is amazing....thank you guys for the Can-Am updates (they're important now) and thanks Pat for the enthusiastic Josue Lopez intro, you sound remotely like a Spanish soccer announcer subsituting Josue for GOOOOOOAAAALLLL!!!!! XD Can we do that every night? ;-]

NOW.....comment away!

PS: The Utica region of "Who's Now" will be forthcoming (AKA: This week)

Derek Drage Receives Player of the Week Honors

Obviously, this is an off-day as the Spirit head down to Brockton for a one-game series tomorrow then back up to Fraser to play two on Wed. & Thur.

There's nothing new on the transaction wires of REAL interest......but on the Can-Am site I saw they had the folowing posted.
=========================================

The official statistician of the Can-Am League, PA-Sportsticker, has selected Grays SS Charles Jeroloman and North Shore Spirit RHP Derek Drage (pictured) as the Batter and Pitcher of the Week for July 30th-August 5th.

In seven games, Jeroloman had a .400 (10-for-25) batting average with three home runs and 13 RBI. He also hit two doubles, scored four runs and had a slugging percentage of .840. In a 9-3 win over the Atlantic City Surf this past Saturday Jeroloman went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and five runs batted in. For the season, the 24-year-old is hitting .288 with four home runs, 20 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Jeroloman was a 21st round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 MLB draft. He played three seasons with Boston reaching Triple A Pawtucket in 2005 and 2006.

Drage, in five relief appearances for North Shore, allowed only four hits and one walk while striking out four batters and collecting five saves. He is currently 3-2 on the year with a 1.11 ERA and nine saves. Drage has struck out 36 batters in 40 2/3 innings pitched and has held opponents to a .184 batting average.

The 25-year-old was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 21st round of the 2004 MLB draft. He pitched three years in the Pirates organization for Williamsport, Lynchburg and Hickory.
=========================================
Congrats Drage, you deserve it. What a week he's had.
And it's good to see he's pitching so well, even after a small break.

Drage is the 4th Spirit to recieve this honor, the others being Chris Farley (sold to the Yankees--Willy is happy.), Ryan Bicondoa (2-times this season thus far), & Vic Davilla

ALSO: I want to add that I looked at the standings page and saw the attendance standings. In my opinion we're not doing bad at all being in 4th with only 31 openings compared to others. I think we're doing pretty well for ourselves with the reported average we have. =]

Enjoy the off day! ^_^

Red Sox note from Joe:
The Sox signed Bobby Kielty, who statistically speaking, is the epitome of an average offensive player (OPS+ of 100). (View his stats here) This is a pretty solid pickup for the Red Sox, just to add to the team's depth. The guy's a decent player.

Eric Hinske has been put on bereavement leave due to a death in the family and the Red Sox have called up Brandon Moss in the meantime - presumably until Kielty comes to town.

Tonight is Schilling's return. Let's see how that goes.

EDIT BY ME:Here's a couple of videos to make ya laugh and think of the Grays ^_^

The Grays or Sussex should look into this guy.

Epic loss

Simply stated, this was one of the most exciting games in Spirit history but also one of the most heartbreaking losses. Campanelli Stadium has always been an awful place for the Spirit and that trend continued with a crushing 4-3 loss at the hands of the Rox in 13 innings.

With the score 1-1 in the 10th inning, Darren Blakely hit a 1 out triple off of Ryan Bernard. Then, Adam Balkan brought him home with a sac fly to give the Spirit the 2-1 advantage.

But in the bottom of the frame, Donny Langdon, brought in to start the 10th, was clearly rattled by the pressure.

He walked de La Cruz on 4 pitches and then gave up an RBI double to Gonzalez, tying the score at 2. A Houdini act by Jamie Baker kept the game alive. With the bases loaded and 1 out, Joe Hough popped out to first and Fransisco LeBron popped out to right field to end the inning.

Baker continued to pitch magnificently and kept the game tied into the 13th. In the 13th frame, Gary Roche made a successful squeeze bunt to score Blakely and put the Spirit on top for the 3rd time on the night.

But again, the lead would not be held. With 1 out, Fransisco LeBron popped one up near the stands on the first base side but Josue Lopez had it pop out of his glove....... UGH HE IS SO USELESS... and LeBron went on to single. Then Guye Senjem walked and Jason Radwan singled, chasing Baker who pitched tremendously but wound up with the hard luck loss.

Shawn McNamara came in and threw a grand total of one pitch to De La Cruz, who knocked a 2RBI single to give the Rox an incredible win.

Joey Siak and John Kelly had outstanding starting pitching efforts. Siak went 7 innings giving up 1 run and John Kelly tossed 9 innings giving up just the 1 run. Derek Drage came in and bridged the gap for the Spirit until the 10th.

We really missed Dennis Robinson tonight.

At the end of the game Vic Davilla got into a furious screaming match with the umpires over ball and strike calls made during the decisive 13th inning. He was certainly inconsistent as he suddenly started squeezing Baker, but it was stupid to just go off on them like that at the end of the game. It looked really dumb. I also saw Vic conferencing with N.L. a few times during the game. What's up with that?

I was as happy as anyone about getting rid of Kennedy but it's starting to look like he was shipped off not to bring in a better baseball guy but to cut costs and have a Loyal Soldier of the Spirit Staff run the ship. Vic definitely has potential but maybe he wasn't ready to manage just yet.

Quite honestly, we really need his bat in the lineup. He stepped in in two games and got three hits and led the Spirit to two wins.

We could have used his bat tonight, and we could have used his glove at first base..... Lopez is awful.

Come back Vic?

Three (four, five, six?) cheers for Joey Siak, and three more for old friend John Kelly, who was absolutely masterful tonight.

Three more cheers for Jamie Baker, tonight's player of the game. He deserved a better fate, but we just plain ran out of guys to go to.

I had a lot of fun tonight... Fun Is Good after all. With the exception of a few nutters in the 13th I had great interaction with all the Brockton fans tonight and even made some friends with our three signs:

IMPEACH MILES!
FREE D-ROB!
ROX: THE TRUE 2006 CHAMPS - YOU GOT HOSED!

This was probably the most fun I've had at a game all year -- the place was electric and supportive and the atmosphere was fun. Maybe it's because my previous experiences in Brockton have been on a Friday or Saturday night which must obviously attract the drunk crowd. Tonight's crowd was great.

Fun is good.

Losing is bad.

Spirit Win In Longest Game In Recent Memroy Up North

I went up with Eric and Alan to the Nashua/spirit game on Jimmy Buffett night up in Nashua. We eventually saw some of the sttaff and the other Dave up there. Anyway, let's get to the game report.......

The Spirit @ Nashua Game By The Numbers:
Spirit: 8 Nashua: 6 Innings: 13
Total Combined Hits: 27 Total Combined Errors: 7
Pitchers Used: 6 Spirit, 7 Nashua
Total Time: 4 hours, 21 Minutes
Total blown calls,Umps: $#$%##@

This game was so long that all of the Can-Am games were done before ours…..and even the Red Sox game IN TEXAS was done before us. Even the fireworks had to be canceled due to city ordinances, announced over the PA system by our friend Spike—filling in for the regular PA guy who was in Manchester. I even ran out of space on the front of my scorecard and had to use the back of it.

This was set to be a good matchup. It was going to be Siak Vs Thorton. Joey Siak was lights out. He went 6 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 6 hits while striking out 2 and walking one. Siak also had the help of a good first tweo innings for the Spirit. In the first, Jerson Perez struck out but got to first on a wild pitch. The next batter, Darren Blackley, belted a 2-run homer to left to make it 1-0 Spirit. Then up came Carlos Rodriquez and her too belted a homer to extend our lead to 2.In the second the Spirit scored again after a Roche single and Rosa double on a passed ball and a B.J. Weed sacrifice fly. The sac fly was an amazing play though, as both center and right fielders dove for the ball VERY close together, with the right fielder coming up with it. This made it 5-0 Spirit after 2.

In the third both teams scored a run. The Spirit scored in the top frame on a RBI single from Mike Toress that scored Rob Fischer, who went to third on a Rea single. The Pride finally got aboard in the bottom frame on a lead-off homer to C Allen Mottram. The score would be 6-1 after three, but the Pride cut the lead in half in the 6th, scoring off of former Pride Jamie Baker. Baker came in after Siak allowed runners onto 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Baker came in and gave up back-to-back RBI singles to make it 6-3 Spirit. Manager Vic DaVilla then took out Baker and replaced him with Robinson, who ended Pride scoring.

The Pride shut down the Spirit lead behind the pitching performances of Jason Kosow and Lance Steven while the Pride made comebacks in the last 2 innings. In the 8th the Pride scored 2 runs on a single from Creighton that turned into an E8 then E6. Then in the 9th they scored to tie it up at 6 on a weird series of events after Fitzy came in to try to pitch. The first batter, Mottram, hit a grounder to Fitzy who then threw the ball to first…..but it was a very weak throw and the runner reached (it was ruled an E1). A wild pitch advanced the runner then the batter grounded out to Fitzgerald to advance the runner to third. The next batter was CF Rich Gianetti who sac flied to right to tie up the game. The bases would later be loaded and Fitzy got out of the jam by getting Creighton to pop up to the catcher.

Now it would go into extra innings. As the game progressed Eric, Alan, Dave, & I got a little frustrated. Before we knew it we were on our 5th pitcher and it was the 12th inning. After a while we began to wonder who would be left to pitch. It seemed like the game would never end, and the announcement of the final score of the Red Sox game only strengthened that. I will admit that although this game was frustrating it was still a blast. For the first time I saw Joe “Slim” Pescuci behind the plate…..I am totally amazed at how much weight the guy lost. However, he was not the same tonight behind the plate as the game progressed. At one point in the 12th he yelled (and swore) at the Spirit dugout for something I don’t think they did on a 2-0 count then after the next ball awards the batter first. He messed up a few times tonight, as did other umps. This game was THE WORST umpping job I’ve seen in a long time.

The Spirit bullpen of Macnamara and Langdon shut down the Pride in extra innings while Palazzolo, El Guapo himself, Mann and Borroughs held the Spirit offense at bay. Then came the 13th inning, and in came the Pride’s Nagasaki to face the Spirit’s Rodriquez with runners in scoring position. Carlos belts it to center for an RBI single, but more damage is done when the center fielder drops the ball and another run scores. The score would then become 8-6 Spirit, and that’s how it would stay in after the bottom frame was complete.

Altogether both teams did very well and the pitching performances were amazing. I really enjoyed theis game and hope that we can take another road trip home. Also, sorry if this ran a little long…..I’m no good at condensing stuff.

SPIRTFANS PLAYER OF THE GAME: I’ll have to say Macnamara. He gave us quite a few great innings in a time of need.

PRE-GAME NOTES:
--Spike called us over. He said during Friday’s game our favorite “MVP” Andy Dillard hit a grounder to short, dogged it out, and was immediately replaced by Wasserman. SO, since DeVries is gone, Spike wants us to carry on tradition and make Dillard our new “Run it out!” guy. XD
--It was Jimmy Buffett night up there. There was a band that was pretty good….but what I really liked where the jerseys, which impressed me.

IN-GAME NOTES:
-- Eric got the home run ball that Darren Blakley blasted in the first. If we are correct, it is the first homer rin ball of the Spirit season.
-- WE got talked to by an usher, who said we were swearing. I don not believe this to be true, and think that it was just some rude fans behind us who didn’t like us cheering for our team. (Sound familiar?)
-- In the 4th Donahue sent home Rosa on a double that should’ve held him to third. The result was an inning-ending out at home. While some say Rosa ran through the sign some others (like myself) say Donahue sent him.
-- I liked Slim when he weighed 500 pounds. He was horrible tonight….but at least we could still make fun of him =]
-- Spike was good as PA announcer tonight, minus a few mishaps.
-- I toom a few small video clips.

POST-GAMED NOTES:
--Obviously,like I said, the planned fireworks show got cancelled
-- Ok,this was uncalled for……leaving the game me and Alan walk down some stairs and Alan very gently grazes a guy walking down. The guy gets realy mad at Alan, even after he apologized, and is still yelling at us while climbing th stairs and we’re heading for an exit. Alan swears at the guy just once and the dude jumps at least 10 feet down and starts chasing after us—but thankfully is held back. That was totally uncalled for….and I hope someone brings it up to the Nashua people, as Spirit people saw this all front and center.

Baker Confirmed - Big bullpen news

Per the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune, it’s been confirmed that Jamie Baker has been cut by his MLB organization and will play for the Spirit this year. This is very big and very good news for the bullpen – he was lights out last year for the Pride. Spike, got a more detailed scouting report for us?

http://www.eagletribune.com/hhnews/local_story_104093850?keyword=topstory+page=2

"Both Boxford's Jamie Baker and Haverhill's Omar Pena were released by teams in spring training, but it didn't take Baker long to hook up with another team.

The former Masconomet Regional pitcher was signed by the San Diego Padres last September after enjoying a superb season with the Nashua Pride of the Can-Am League, compiling a 3-1 record and a 1.82 ERA, allowing just 21 hits in 34 innings, striking out 31. Opponents batted just .179 against him.

Baker, 23, started off spring training with the Padres in Peoria, Ariz., and threw the ball well at first but, when he developed stiffness in his shoulder, he was released.

"I just needed a little rest, but I guess they didn't want to wait," said Baker. "That was a little bit of a disappointment."

Still, Baker was quickly signed by the North Shore Spirit, where he is expected to be used in relief, the same successful role he played for the Pride."
