Interesting lineup analysis

I will be the first to admit that this program has its flaws - primarily, speed can't be taken into the equation - but this ideal-lineup-generator I found on the Interwebs is pretty interesting.

Using OBP and SLG, this program determines runs created per game based on each possible batting order, and spits out the best and worst possible batting orders. Let's see how the way Vic lined them up matched what the analysis calls for.

I put in stats for the following lineup: c) trezza 1b) davilla 2b) roche ss) perez 3b) luis lopez dh) josue lopez lf) teilon cf) weed rf) torres. I used Teilon and Davilla's average career statistics instead of their season statistics, as the sample size this year was too small; for the rest I used '07 stats.

In the real world, the Spirit scored 4.978 runs per game. On average, the program predicted around 5.3 r/gm for the Spirit, although you have to remember that in real life, the Spirit lineup didn't always have Davilla, Teilon, or the Lopezes ... if they had those guys all season long they probably would have scored closer to 5.2-5.4 runs per game.

The following lineup was projected to score 5.401 runs per game:
R/gm
5.401 JLopez Davilla Trezza Perez Torres Roche LLopez Teilon Weed

Having Josue lead off obviously doesn't make a lot of 'conventional' sense; the first projection that had a reasonably normal leadoff hitter had Jerson Perez leading off.
R/gm
5.397 Perez Davilla Trezza JLopez Torres Roche LLopez Teilon Weed

Interesting in that I wouldn't really expect the 'ideal lineup' to have Trezza at #3; obviously Ks aren't taken into the equation here.

Using ONLY stats and projections from 1998-2002 (the original formula includes 1954-2004), the following lineup looks good:

R/gm
5.442 Torres JLopez LLopez Davilla Perez Teilon Trezza Roche Weed

That's pretty solid, but I might swap Josue with Perez.

Almost every single one of the 'best lineups' using 1954-2004 had Vic Davilla batting 2nd. Using 1998-2002 stats, one of the Lopezes was considered ideal for the no.2 hole with Vic usually in the 4 spot.

I couldn't find anything close to our actual lineup.

The 'worst' possible lineups were the following:

R/gm
5.120 Teilon Weed Trezza Roche LLopez JLopez Perez Torres Davilla
R/gm
5.090 Teilon Roche Perez Weed Trezza LLopez Torres JLopez Davilla

This demonstrates a few things to me: First of all, it's not all that surprising that this is considered a 'bad' lineup. Secondly, it also demonstrates that the Spirit, when at full strength, were a damn good offensive team --- the worst, dumbest, most insane possible batting order still would theoretically have averaged 5.090 runs per game. Unfortunately, injuries, major league purchases and the like prevented this team from reaching its full potential throughout the season.

BY THE WAY:
Another little tid-bit from baseballmusings.com, just to further piss off any Mets fans that might read this blog [sorry Mets fans (not really)]-

"According to Baseball Prospectus, the Mets collapse was the second biggest in history, just behind the 1995 Angels. That's based on fall from the highest probability of making the playoffs, based on BP's monte carlo method. On August 20th, 1995, the Angels had a 99.988% of making the playoffs. The Mets were 99.80 at their peak on September 12th. Now if you factor in time, I think the Mets fall was worse, but not much. The Angels peaking in late August says they were a great team in a weak division with weak wild cards. The Mets were a good team with a big lead late."

Vic coming Back today

According to Wooden,he said that Mr Leahy said Vic is gonna be back in the lineup today.

So there's something to look forward to....but the question is who will be released to make room for Vic?
It would have to be a veteran since he's a veteran......so I think Welch is out of the picture of getting cut, like Wooden also said,as we have an abundance of rookies. So...which vet will make way for Vic,or do we somehow have a vet spot open for just this occasion? Stay tuned.....

In other news....i tried looking up for a good spirit logo to use in a playoff ad and came across the following site:

The entry of July 18 got my eye and made me chuckle a bit XD

4 straight

I tuned in to the radio tonight during the 5th inning to find, much to my delight, that the Spirit had sprinted out to yet another early lead, putting up 4 runs in the first two innings en route to a 6-1 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes.

North Shore had 12 hits - that's 33 runs and 55 hits in 4 games, for those keeping track.

In a surprising twist, Dennis Robinson got the start tonight, filling in for the injured Matt Bishop. He performed extremely well, giving the Spirit six solid innings and giving up just one run. Baker, Langdon and Drage combined to give North Shore's bullpen another shutout performance.

Vic Davilla was a pedestrian 2-for-4 with just a home run, a double, and a sac fly. What a bum.

Alex Trezza added his 6th HR of the season as part of the Spirit hit parade.

North Shore can totally avenge their earlier embarassment in Worcester by completing a 4-game sweep tomorrow night at 7 PM. Gary Galvez will take on Worcester's Reed Willett in his Spirit debut.

Reasons for enthusiasm

There have been several points this year where it looked like the team was starting to "click" and "turn the corner" - only to eventually fall back into the morass of inept offense and .500 ball.

But it's hard to dispute these numbers - in the past 3 games, the Spirit have 27 runs, 43 hits, and 3 victories. Vic has 6 RBI. Josue Lopez has 9 hits.

The offense is simply red-hot right now.

Torres has been outstanding all year.

Vic has been MVP-caliber during each of his stints this year --- this one BETTER be permanent.

Josue Lopez and Jerson Perez are suddenly swinging very hot bats.

Gary Roche has been solid and impressive over the past month. BJ Weed is getting on base and scoring runs again - he's scored 6 times in the past 2 games.

The only 'black holes' have been Trezza and Carlos Rodriguez with their many strikeouts - but they are both powerful hitters capable of taking any pitcher deep at any time. And each of them contributed to today's hit parade - both drove in a run in the first inning.

If anything, the main concern right now is the fact that the Spirit have unloaded/lost some of their best pitchers.

Just like last night, the pitching tonight was shaky but effective as the Spirit crusied to an 8-1 victory over Worcester to improve to 2-0 in the 2nd half.

Joey Siak pitched 5 2/3 solid innings to get the win, giving up just one run on a Wishy HR in the 2nd. Donny Langdon, Jamie Baker and Billy Simon had a few troubling moments in 3 1/3 innings of relief, but they got the job done and didn't give up a single run.

The Spirit put up all the runs Joey would need in the first inning. Vic Davilla hit a 2RBI double for ribbies #8 and 9 on the season... pretty ridiculous, seeing as he's played in seven games. Alex Trezza and Carlos Rodriguez added RBIs to send the Spirit off to a flying 4-0 start.

Wishy's HR in the 3rd briefly made it seem like a game, but from there, the Spirit were on cruise control. Just like last night, it was a stifling victory...very boring, but very dominant and effective.

Josue Lopez added 2 more hits tonight including an RBI double in the 7th that built the Spirit lead to 7-1. BJ Weed also chipped in with an RBI in the 8th to give us the final score of 8-1.

Billy Simon loaded the bases in the 9th, but he kept Worcester off the board.

Before this series, I thought 4-3 would be a decent start on the road for the 2nd half. 2-0 is certainly a great way to get things rolling.

D@MN!$@#!# - Farley to the Yankees - Spirit Roster Shakeup - 2 ex-Rox on their way to Lynn

SPIRIT ROSTER SHAKEUP

Bye, bye, Farley:
North Shore Spirit RHP Chris Farley (pictured) had his contract sold to the Yankees as announced by the Can-Am League today. Farley is the fifth Can-Am player purchased by a major league organization since the beginning of the 2007 season.

Farley had a record of 8-2 with an earned run average of 1.41 in 10 starts with the Spirit. He struck out 71 batters and allowed only 15 walks in 63 2/3 innings pitched

----

Josue Matos and Vic Davilla were also removed from the roster.

---

Two ex- Rox on board: Joe Hough and Gary Galvez on their way to North Shore. Not sure how we got them -- probably a trade for Farley's reversionary rights? We obviously needed a starter to replace the loss of Farley, so hello Galvez... Hough instantly becomes the starting LF - he's hitting .240 this year with a pretty good .340 OBP.

----

The team has 'roster stability' now - 10 pitchers, 12 position players, and the way we attack Half #2 now looks something like this:

Starting Pitchers
M. Bishop
J. Siak
R. Bicondoa
S. McNamara
G. Galvez

Relievers
J. Baker
B. Simon
D. Langdon
D. Robinson

Closer
D. Drage

Starting lineup
C- Trezza
1B- Luis Lopez
2B- Roche
SS- Perez
3B- Torres
LF- Hough
CF- Weed
RF- Rodriguez
DH- Josue Lopez

UIF - Gilbert Gil
Backup C - Chris Wood
Backup OF - Jared McGuire

Torres, Gil, Weed and Luis Lopez have all proven to be flexible in terms of what position they can play.

We now have a 'complete roster', although I wish it were a bit stronger overall. Losing Farley will hurt... bad. The pitching staff is still the best in the league, however.

Let's go get 'em...

MORE News

It's been a busy day. [4 new front page stories on one day? I don't even do that during the season!] The Spirit have signed C/IF Juan Gutierrez, who spent last year at single-A Delmarva.

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/G/Juan-Gutierrez.shtml

His stat page reveals that tore up some lower level leagues a few years ago before being rather mediocre at high A ball. His career minor league average is .265 with 26 dingers and 163 RBI in 1051 AB. His OBP is a decent .351. Perhaps he will become the catcher, moving Torres to 1B and big Brad Rea to the DH spot?
