Derek Drage Receives Player of the Week Honors
Obviously, this is an off-day as the Spirit head down to Brockton for a one-game series tomorrow then back up to Fraser to play two on Wed. & Thur.
There's nothing new on the transaction wires of REAL interest......but on the Can-Am site I saw they had the folowing posted.
=========================================
The official statistician of the Can-Am League, PA-Sportsticker, has selected Grays SS Charles Jeroloman and North Shore Spirit RHP Derek Drage (pictured) as the Batter and Pitcher of the Week for July 30th-August 5th.
In seven games, Jeroloman had a .400 (10-for-25) batting average with three home runs and 13 RBI. He also hit two doubles, scored four runs and had a slugging percentage of .840. In a 9-3 win over the Atlantic City Surf this past Saturday Jeroloman went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and five runs batted in. For the season, the 24-year-old is hitting .288 with four home runs, 20 RBI and 11 runs scored.
Jeroloman was a 21st round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2004 MLB draft. He played three seasons with Boston reaching Triple A Pawtucket in 2005 and 2006.
Drage, in five relief appearances for North Shore, allowed only four hits and one walk while striking out four batters and collecting five saves. He is currently 3-2 on the year with a 1.11 ERA and nine saves. Drage has struck out 36 batters in 40 2/3 innings pitched and has held opponents to a .184 batting average.
The 25-year-old was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 21st round of the 2004 MLB draft. He pitched three years in the Pirates organization for Williamsport, Lynchburg and Hickory.
=========================================
Congrats Drage, you deserve it. What a week he's had.
And it's good to see he's pitching so well, even after a small break.
Drage is the 4th Spirit to recieve this honor, the others being Chris Farley (sold to the Yankees--Willy is happy.), Ryan Bicondoa (2-times this season thus far), & Vic Davilla
ALSO: I want to add that I looked at the standings page and saw the attendance standings. In my opinion we're not doing bad at all being in 4th with only 31 openings compared to others. I think we're doing pretty well for ourselves with the reported average we have. =]
Enjoy the off day! ^_^

Red Sox note from Joe:
The Sox signed Bobby Kielty, who statistically speaking, is the epitome of an average offensive player (OPS+ of 100). (View his stats here) This is a pretty solid pickup for the Red Sox, just to add to the team's depth. The guy's a decent player.
Eric Hinske has been put on bereavement leave due to a death in the family and the Red Sox have called up Brandon Moss in the meantime - presumably until Kielty comes to town.
Tonight is Schilling's return. Let's see how that goes.

EDIT BY ME:Here's a couple of videos to make ya laugh and think of the Grays ^_^
The Grays or Sussex should look into this guy.

Off-day thoughts

How appropriate
-I do solemnly swear that no matter what happens over the next seven days, I will not criticize Josue Lopez. Even if he gets six Golden Sombreros. He's bought himself that much good will with the 5-for-5 night in Brockton and the game winning homer the other night.

-Again, props to Brockton radio for the great job they do with the postgame show.
-We start the 2nd half with 7 really rough games: 4 in Worcester, then the big showdown for 3 games in Quebec. We will learn a lot about this team's readiness to challenge for the 2nd half title in the very first week. Let's see how this goes.
-We keep having these moments where it seems like the offense is alive. Maybe the re-setting of the records will take a load of pressure off tshe boys and let them keep performing the way they did last night.
-I'm gonna try to go to Worcester for one of the next 4 games and get some pictures.
-The Yawkey League had its all star game today at Fraser Field.

-Check out my photos from last night.
-Every year I roll my eyes as the ESPYs--- one of 16 annual ESPN celebrations of how great and wonderful ESPN is--- approach. But every year I watch them, and every year I am entertained. And yet, I hate myself for it. :)

Blame the Yankees (ASG Live Blog)
It's 1-0 NL in the 1st - I blame Derek Jeter. Why? Because. He grounded into a double play in the first inning and failed to make a ridiculous diving play to prevent the first NL run. I guess that will happen when the Yankees have no chance of taking advantage of home-field in the World Series. ;) EDIT: And A-Rod makes an error in the 3rd... and he gets gunned at the plate in the 4th....... YANKEES SUCK! They are tanking it to ruin our chances of getting HFA
My favorite All-star break tradition is thinking of random lists of players to pass the time. Here are two.
The North Shore Spirit "All Mediocre List"
-Guys who were decent enough that you strangely remember their name, but weren't particularly outstanding.
C) Onix Mercado
1B) Fran Riordan
2B) Mike Granger
SS) Yuri Sanchez
3B) Jason Startari
LF) Eddie Muth
CF) John Schmitz
RF) Luis Sabino
SP) Jake Mullis
SP) Mike Hoyt
The North Shore Spirit "We Hardly Knew Ye" List - Self explanatory
C) Brian Lentz
1B) Dan Batz
2B) Erick Meijias
SS) Robert Tewksbury
3B) Zach Strong
OF) Kevin Pitts
OF) Jose Castellanos
OF) Chad Gabriel
SP) Jose Brazaoban
RP) Ryan Warpinski
Spirit All-Time All Stars (I did this last year, but I went back over it to see if I changed my mind on anything)
C) Frank Charles
1B) Vic Davilla
2B) Marcos Agramonte
SS) Chris Rowan - Mainly due to lack of competition, let's hope Gil Gil can challenge!!
3B) Mike Torres - I think it's fair to bump Teilon for Torres at this point, although I'm not a huge fan of Torres's defense.
OF) Brian Macchi
OF) Rob Fischer
OF) Carlos Sepulveda
SP) John Kelly
RP) Kevin Fitzgerald
All-Names Team
Jake Mullis/Jake Wallis
Garret Weir/Garret Greer
