Three runs in the eighth give the Spirit a huge, huge win
After giving up single runs in the 3rd and the 5th, the Spirit roared back to score three runs in the 8th inning to win the game 3-2.
Mike Torres blasted a 2 run homer to tie the game. Luis Lopez followed Torres with a double. Then, Alex Trezza brought him home with a game-winning triple.
The win gives the Spirit a 3-1 record on their trip to New Haven.
We start another tough series against Worcester at Fraser Field tomorrow.

As always, fun is good at the crappiest ballpark in America..... if not the world

The newcomer made a splash in New Haven...
Make no mistake: Yale Field really is the epitome of a crappy, crappy ballpark. I really truly did hear crickets chirping on Monday night. The place is in disrepair and there’s garbage everywhere. The concessions are awful, the ticket prices are ridiculous, the playing field is choppy… nobody likes Yale Field. And it shows – there were no more than 300 people at each of the games on Monday and Tuesday.

Yes, all three of these pictures were taken DURING the game.
But with that said, for the second year in a row, I had a freaking BLAST at Yale Field. It probably helps that the Spirit are 5-1 in my trips to Yale, and pulled off a very exciting win on Monday night. I also greatly enjoy being able to yell GO SPIRIT and having it echo back to me about 2 seconds later because the place is so empty. I enjoy the strange, quiet atmosphere at the park.
“For all its faults,
And I think what is most enjoyable is the sense of humor with which the Cutters employees handle their franchise’s hopeless situation. The food vendors walk through totally empty sections yelling, unenthusiastically, ‘peanuts,’ ‘soda,’ or whatever – and sometimes they walk right up to people and ask them personally if they want something. The “fun team” goes out and recruits people to participate in on-field games. When NH’s mascot came over to us on the first base side and started ragging on us for supporting the opponent, Grant said “Hey, it’s not a crime to support a successful team,” and the mascot shrugged his shoulders and nodded his head.
"The World's Most Famous Mascot"... or not
A member of the world-famous Cutters Fun Team during "30 SECONDS OF MAYHEM"
Everyone loves Sumo Wrestling, so needless to say it happens like once a year at Fraser
If I were to make a list of things the Cutters do wrong as an organization, it would take up this entire post, so instead I want to focus on a few things they do right, which the Spirit could certainly pick up on:
- -Their program is much meatier and better than ours – fewer fluff features, more information about the makeup of the ballclub and information about the league. The Spirit’s 2003 program was pretty good at that, but the programs have gotten worse each year.
- -Out-of-town updates: I’ve been harping on this for a while now, but it really does make a difference. Every game, during the 8th inning, they run through the 4 other Can-Am games, along with the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets. It really isn’t that hard to do.
- -Their ‘fun team,’ which I guess is their equivalent of Julie a few years ago, and random interns now, is very enthusiastic. They are very nice people and seem to really like their job. They also all sit together on one side of the park and cheer for the Cutters throughout the game. It was a nice touch.
- -They do a good job of constantly promoting future games and promotions while at the park, but unfortunately there aren’t many people there to hear the advertisements.
- -Tripper is actually a cool mascot, and doesn’t look like a dead fish, which is what usually comes to mind when I think of Slugger.
Now THAT is a tough job... seriously
The games themselves were fun as well. Monday’s game was outstanding – Welch made a great first impression with a game-winning squeeze bunt in the top of the 9th, and Dennis Robinson worked around ten hits to earn the victory. The Spirit followed up with another win on Tuesday.
Two victorious days to open the trip...
Today’s loss was a rough one to take, but that’s baseball.
The Spirit fell down 8-2 after Joey Siak absolutely lost it late in his outing and started getting shelled. They made a great rally from there, however, culminating in a 5-run eighth which featured Luis Lopez’s 3 run home run to tie the game. Luis had 2 homers on the day.
Now that's a wild game...
Unfortunately, Donny Langdon served the lead right back up in the bottom of the 8th and the Spirit lost 9-8. It was encouraging to see the offense do so well, however. You can’t win ‘em all. But I liked the resolve showed by the team.

All together now.. dun-da-dun-dun, dun-da-dun-dun, ooooo-weee-oooo-wee-ooo-wee-ooo
Either way, I’ll be sad not to be there. I sure hope both teams still exist next year – unfortunately, it’s looking rough on both fronts. But if the Spirit do take on the Cutters at Yale Field in 2008, I’ll definitely be there.

Au revoir, New Haven....
This video has magical powers - the Red Sox took the lead as I put it on. Woo Roche!
Update: I just want to sincerely thank Spike for informing us that the batters can't hear us when we shout at them. I was totally unaware of this fact, and I assumed all along that their first thought was the people in the crowd and not the ball traveling at them at about 90 MPH. We are so fortunate to have been enligtened by the Great One on that issue. From now on, I will be sure to use the only baseball cheer that is 100% proven to be effective- namely, yelling "Rocketfire." Thank you again. -JG

Spirit Win One In 9th Thanks To Newcomer Down In CT
We won in the 9th thanks to a newcomer to the Spirit--below is the game post by John Leahy from the Spirit's official site, read on for more info.:
Newcomer John Welch squeezed home the winning run in the top of the ninth inning and Dennis Robinson pitched eight strong innings to lead the North Shore Spirit to a 4-2 win over the New Haven County Cutters at Yale Field in West Haven, CT. in game one of a four game series.
It was a classic pitchers duel, as it turned out, between Dennis Robinson and Rolando Valles. New Haven broke on top in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs in the first as Ervin Alcantara tripled and came home on an Henri Stanley sacrifice fly. Jeremy Pickrel then reached on a bunt single and moved up on a Junior Zamora single. Chas Terni then ripped an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.
The Spirit would tie it at 2-2 in the third. Gilbert Gil and B.J. Weed led with back to back singles. Two outs later, Luis Lopez and and Alex Trezza stroked consecutive RBI singles to knot the score. The game stayed that way until the ninth. Alex Trezza legged out a clutch infield single and moved up on a Josue Lopez base knock. Allen Mottram sacrificed the runners up and then John Welch, in his first game with the Spirit, laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to force in Trezza. Gilbert Gil then reached on an infield hit to score the insurance run and make it 4-2.
Robinson went eight innings, allowing ten hits, walking one and fanning one. Derek Drage pitched the ninth to earn his fifth save.
Game two is Tueday night at 7:05, and Ryan Bicondoa will oppose Brad Whitworth. Game time is at 7:05 and can be heard live on 1510 the Zone and at www.northshorespirit.com.

Not cool.
If I recall correctly the Spirit got 3 runs on 11 hits while the Cutters got 6 runs on 5 hits.....
Dear 2007 season,
stop being so frustrating :O
Love,
Spirit fans everywhere
Agh
We have to win game 2 - we can't lose a series to New Haven.
On the bright side, I'm feeling darn good about our chances with Farley on the hill.
Let's go
Bic is pitching in game one. Bucky Kosyk is pitching for the Cutters.
Farley is pitching in game two.

NHC 1 0 1 / 0 0 0 / 0 / 0 0 / 1 --- 3
Bot 1st: Pickerill RBI groundout. 1-0 New Haven.
Top 2nd: Spirit put the first two runners on, but someone (torres?) grounds into a double play, and then My Man Josue Lopez grounds out to end the inning. Still 1-0 Cutters.
Bot 3rd: Junior Zamora RBI single scores Pickerill, 2-0 NH.
Top 4th: Josue Lopez grounds out with 2 men on and 2 out. I SERIOUSLY would rather have Fran Riordan at this point.
Top 5th: HUGE! Gary Roche RBI single scores Jerson Perez and moves Adam Balkan up into scoring position. Roche has been excellent lately. Runners at the corners w/ 1 out and Mike Torres up. Let's go Spirit! 2-1 Cutters.
Top 5th: AFJ@J!#@L!J@#L!je:!J#L@#!L@#J! - Torres flies out to left field and Adam Balkan is thrown out attempting to tag up and come home. AGGGGGGGH!
Bot 5th: Quick inning for Bic. Let's get him some runs, now... 6 outs to work with.
Top 6th: Luis Lopez rips a leadoff double down the 3rd base line.... chasing Kosyk.
Top 6th: Mike Joyce in to pitch for the Cutters.
Top 6th: Josue!!! he comes through finally and ties the game with an RBI single. Beautiful! 2-2.
Bot 6th: Another 1-2-3 for Bic.
Top 7th: With a runner on 1st and 1 out Adam Piechowski in to pitch for New Haven.
Top 7th: With 2 men on and 1 out, Mike Torres grounds into a clutch double play. :( It's now nail-bite time.
Bot 7th: From the sounds of it, BJ Weed saves the game with a tremendous catch to end the bottom of the 7th. To extras we go.
---EXTRA INNINGS!---
Top 8th: Andy Weimer in to pitch for the Cutters. I like the fact that they are using up their bullpen here. I'll like it even more if we win.
Top 8th: Luis Lopez reaches first with a leadoff single, but two outs later, it's up to Josue...
...aaand the PA announcer in New Haven just referred to him as "ho-sue." Ho-sue is back to typical Ho-sue style, popping out to end the 8th. More "nail-bite time" in the bottom of the 8th...
Bot 8th: Donny Langdon in to make his 20th appearance of the season. Bic goes 7 solid innings, giving up two runs on three hits, and will exit with a no-decision.
Bot 8th: Langdon comes in to face the lefty, gets one out by way of the K, and is taken out in favor of Dennis Robinson.
Bot 8th: A pair of two out singles: Gaskin lines a single, then Encarnacion gets a base hit to put runners on 1st and 2nd with two men out... Matt Hackney is up for New Haven County.
Bot 8th: D-Rob gets Hackney to ground out and we go to the 9th! Interesting to note that right now the Spirit have 11 hits to New Haven County's 5. Let's get hits AND bring 'em home in the 9th, boys.
Top 9th: Bunting is f!@$!#!#@!#!ing STUPID, EXHIBIT 129249210381290381058840982103981203812038120381032193810. I can't tell if it was a bunt attempt gone awry or a straight steal. Either way, DUMB
Top 9th: "Gotta love the aggressiveness of BJ Weed" - no, no you don't. Gotta love the stupidity of wasting a leadoff walk. There ya go...... Adam Balkan flies out to end the inning. At least he didn't rip a double that would have scored BJ if he didn't get thrown out. Aggh!
Bot 9th: The drama is killing me here in the bottom of the 9th... full count, 2 outs, 2 men on...
Bot 9th: D-Rob escapes the jam, and I still have a few fingernails left. Yay!
Top 10th: Not much going on for the Spirit offense here but DAMN the Red Sox are absolutely pounding on the Devil Rays right now.. Coco w/ a grand slam in the first and Lowell with a 3-run blast in the 2nd, Beckett w/ 5 Ks - 9-0 Sox in the 2nd inning (?!)
Top 10th: Nothing doing...aaagh.
Bot 10th: Cutters start the inning with 2 singes (Zamora, Gaskin)...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh
Bot 10th: Orlando Encarnacion walkoff RBI single..............................................................................................................................
Not looking good...
If any of you out there are intimate with the Big Man Upstairs, do what you can to get the rain away from West Haven, CT tonight.

Six in a row...
I do NOT like losing Blakely as he was one of our few power threats and was producing fairly well despite his low average. I especially dislike giving him up for nothing. Rea, whatever. Vic evidently is going with the 'play every now and then' plan. He really ought to just come back permanantly as he is clearly our best hitter. This Luis Lopez cat seems like a pretty good player.
Gilbert Gil played LF tonight as the Spirit are down to three 'natural outfielders' in Rodriguez, Weed and Balkan. I'd imagine that that will change eventually... I find it hard to believe that the Spirit will keep carrying so many pitchers.
Despite all the changes, however, one thing did not change: The Spirit remain on a roll. Matt Bishop was not dominant tonight by any stretch of the imagination. He was chased in the 6th inning with a 4-2 lead after putting the tying runs on base. But the bullpen (D-Rob, McNamara, Langdon and Drage) finished the job and got Bishop the win as North Shore won 7-4.
Carlos Rodriguez made the big blow early in the game with a 3RBI double in the first inning. Gary Roche also had one of his best games of the season, driving in three runs of his own including a 2RBI double in the 7th.
The Spirit controlled the game from start to finish. It only got a bit shaky when Shawn McNamara struggled in the 8th, giving up 2 runs and letting the Cutters get back into the game. It's safe to say that he is a concern at this point, along with Jamie Baker. The rest of the bullpen has been excellent, however.
A 4th of July battle against New Haven comes tomorrow night at 7. Seven in a row anyone?
Roll on?
Anyone out there in readerland tonight?
The Spirit have added a new 1B, Luis Lopez. Josue Lopez is at DH. Vic Davilla is back into retirement, apparently. Sigh.
Update: Darren Blakely has been released?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?! and Brad Rea has left the ballclub. Jerson Perez is back. GREAT. We are starting to turn it around, now's a perfect time to shake up the entire roster.
Pitching matchup:
Bryan Brainer vs. Matt Bishop.
NSS 3 0 0 / 0 1 0 / 3 0 0 -- 7
NHC 0 1 0 / 0 0 1 / 0 2 0-- 4
Top 1: Carlos Rodriguez hits a 3-run double!
Bot 2: A throwing error by Mike Torres allows a runner on first, Chris Gaskin, to score, making it 3-1 Spirit.
Top 5: Gary Roche RBI single scores BJ Weed and the Spirit have their 3-run lead back.
Bot 6: Henry Stanley hits a solo homer to cut it to 4-2. It's the first HR allowed by Bishop all year. Bishop gives up two more hits putting the tying runs aboard.
Bot 6: With two men on, Dennis Robinson comes in to pitch for the Spirit.... and D-Rob gets out of the jam!
Top 7: Gary Roche smashes a 2-run double, driving in Jerson Perez and Gilbert Gil. 3 RBI for Roche, and it's 6-2 Spirit. Roche scores on an RBI groundout later in the inning... 7-2 good guys.
Bot 8: Shaun McNamara in to pitch for the Spirit... Irvin Alcantara RBI single makes it 7-3. Matt Hackney scores on an RBI groundout - Spirit 7, Cutters 4. Tying run at the plate, Baker & Langdon warming up....
Bot 8: Donny Langdon relieves a struggling McNamara..... and Donny escapes the jam. To the 9th...
Bot 9: Drage in to finish it off.... aaand we win. Sounds like Luis Lopez made a slick play at first to end the game.

Screw it
Maybe Trezza can be our savior?

Now THAT's Bicondoa!!!
In addition to Bicondoa's outstanding outing, the Spirit got great pitching from Shawn McNamara, who pitched 1.2 one-hit innings, Donny Langdon, who came in in the 8th inning to retire lefty Henry Stanley, and Kevin Fitzgerald, who slammed the door with a perfect ninth inning to earn his 3rd save. He struck out two batters beforegetting Jeremy Pickrel to ground out to first to end the ballgame.
It was not a great day if you like offense. The Spirit scored one run on four hits on the day while the Cutters were held to only two hits and never got a runner past 2nd base.
This is the third time the Spirit have won two in a row this year (@ Nashua and @ Atlantic City) and the first time at home. The Spirit, now 8-7, go for their first proper sweep of the year (the rain shortened 2 game series in Atlantic City doesn't count) tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 PM. The game will be broadcast on Tape Delay on 1510 the Zone at 6 PM, so nothing will be posted here until the broadcast is over.
Player of the Game: Ryan Bicondoa (1)
EDIT: I've decided that posting this is going to be a tradition following all Spirit wins:

SPIRIT WIN 7-3!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Chris Farley pitched six solid innings, giving up just three runs to pick up the victory. Jamie Baker, Derek Drage, and Dennis Robinson shut the door from there, giving the Spirit their 7th win of the season.
Interestingly enough, Vic gave Dennis Robinson the ball in the 9th instead of Kevin Fitzgerald. Maybe something like this was needed to give the bullpen a kick in the pants. Fitz has been very unstable so far this year. I’m confident that he’ll turn it around, but until then let’s hope Robinson can do their job.
The Spirit brought their bats to tonight’s game Jerson Perez and Brad Rea got solo homers in the seventh and eighth, respectively to give the Spirit bullpen some much-needed insurance. Each of those guys had a pair of RBI on the night as Rea knocked home the first Spirit run in the 2nd and Rea brought a run home in the 4th.
The Spirit then put together a big inning in the 3rd – and the key to it all was BJ Weed, the leadoff hitter, who grounded one to the right side of the infield and busted it down the line to pick up the infield hit. He came around to score on another hustle play. Carlos Rodriguez was up with runners on first and third and one out. Carlos chopped it to shortstop where it looked like Chas Terni had a chance to attempt the double play. But as he saw BJ Weed breaking for home plate, he went home with the ball, but Weed hustled down the line and got around the catcher’s tag to tie the game.
Mike Torres and Wally Rosa added RBI hits in the inning to give the Spirit a 4-2 lead. In the 4th the Spirit stretched their lead and BJ Weed was again a factor. Gil Gil led off the inning with a double and was moved to 3rd on a picture-perfect bunt by BJ Weed. Then Perez was able to bring him home with a single to make it 5-2.
The Spirit now have two more at home against the hapless Cutters before wrapping up the homestand with another three against the flying Grays.
POTG: Tough call... but I'll say Perez. He added some nice defense with his solid hitting.Tuesday, June 05, 2007
New Haven leads the Can-Am "CrapPot"
It seemed like destiny that all the other games in the Can-Am League were rained out tonight, putting the entire focus of all 5 Can-Am League fans on the epic showdown brewing in that amazing baseball town of Augusta, NJ.
In a true test of grit, guts, and determination, the slight favorite New Haven County Cutters eeked out a 2-0 win on the road -- a score that proves that, on this night at least, bad pitching beats bad hitting.
Sussex, now 1-10 on the season, has lost 8 in a row --- an outstanding accomplishment of course, but a far cry from their historic exploits of last year. One can only dream of a repeat of the "glory days" of 2006.
New Haven leads the CrapPot series 1-0--- we will follow this dramatic tale as it unfolds.
