A lot of the people left the ballpark tonight thinking and saying something an anouncer at Lake Placid asked over 20 years ago...“Do you believe in miracles?” A crowd that gradually filled up Fraser field to it’s first regular-season sellout of the year (3,611) left with nobody unhappy with the outcome. Even if they went for just the fireworks aftef the game, they ended up enjoying Spirit Baseball! No soul there didn’t cheer on a team representing this region of the North Shore here in the Great State of Massachusetts in the united States Of America against a Canadian team. This first place juggernaut came in confident and with a 23-10 record. North Shore’s Bryan Morse (4-1) and Quebec’s Julien Tucker ()engaged in a superb pitchers duel, with Morse and the Spirit coming out on top 1-0. The only run of the game came in the sixth on CF Rob Fischer’s RBI single, bringing home 2B Marcos Agramonte, who stole 4 bases in the game after going 3-3. Quebec threatened in the seventh, only to have pinch-runner Simon Legare thrown out by RF Brian Macchi in a play at the plate. Morse scattered eight hits for the win, striking out one and walking two, while Tucker allowed five hits, striking out six. Into Game 2 we go,with a little momentum going in we were more confident then before. McCally took the mound for us and Freedman took it for Quebec. In the 2nd Quebec got an RBI fielders choice and an RBI single, helped along with a Marcos error, to make it 2-0 Quebec. They struck again in the 3rd, getting an RBI double from SS Scalabrini and an RBI single from LF Buck “Botox” McNabb to make it 5-0 Quebec. The Spirit cut that lead in the bottom frame. Weir hits a single and then Marcos hits a double to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Robbie then comes through, hitting a 2RBI single, but is unfortunately caught up in a rundown between 1st and 2nd and is tagged out. Quebec gets another run in the 4th, getting an RBI double from1B Todd Leathers. After that McCally walked Legare and was taken out, to be replaced by Peter Soteropoulos, McCally went 3.1 innings with 4 strikes and 6 runs given up. In the bottom of the 5th the Spirit staged a huge rally that the crowd got behind. The Spirit lead-off with an error from CF Geoff Tomlinson to Marcos. Fischer and DaVilla grounded out and left us to dream on for any sort of lead....but wait a second, it’s the person in 3rd for homers in the league, C Travis Oglesby! Surely he can get us a huge hit...but no, he’s walked. Next up is Alex “New Guy” Garcia, he gets an RBI single. Mac-attack time! Brian Macchi comes to the plate and drills a 2RBI triple, his second of the year! Storey tells us one, giving us an RBI single to tie the game at 6,and that’s how it would be for a while. Garret Weir steps up and hits a high line drive towards left, but 3B Eddie Lantigua proved why he’s the player of the week....jumping up a good 3 feet to make an amazing catch. The game was quiet until the 7th inning, when there were 2 North Shore ejections. Kennedy came out to go to the mound, but it was a fast one! Instead he made a b-line to home to argue a ball that was clearly a strike and was promptly ejected. It took 3-5 people to hold Kennedy back from pumbling the ump, and in the scuffle Jim Tgettis was somehow thrown too. Klae Calvert started to get into it, but stopped after Kennedy and Jimmy started walking off the filed. The game went into 9 innings, like a regular game, and lasted 2 hours and 50 minutes. In the bottom of the 9th our savior (I call him “Jebus“) came through. Agramonte grounded out to 1st,but then Robbie got walked. Vic comes up to the plate, the weight of “Spirit Village” on his or Travis’ shoulders...A PASSED BALL!!!!!!...Now the turn of events looks good, except the count is working against DaVil......HOLD ON, IT’S A HIT! ROBBIE IS ‘ROUND 3RD AND HEADIN’ HOME....THE THROW IS LATE! SPIRIT WIN!!! SPIRIT WIN!!! ROB HIGH-FIVES FANS,SPIRIT WIN!!!!!!! WHAT A GAME!!!!!! The first sellout of the year wasn’t turned down at all, with a complete-game shutout form Morse and an extra-inning walk win against the first place team it couldn’t have been better. This is what baseball is all about, cheering on your team in the good and bad and facing a very good and formidable rival in Quebec. As some Quebec players leave the field they hear a bang and look up...fireworks, tonight’s promo, light up the sky. What a way to let Lynn know their team won.
SPIRITFANS.BLOGSPOT.COM CO-PLAYERS OF GAME 1 (2): Marcos A. & Rob F. got honors from me and Jack tonight. Marcos’ stolen bases came up big, as did Rob’s game-winning RBI single.
SPIRITFANS.BLOGSPOT.COM CO-PLAYERS OF GAME 2 (2): The bullpen got honors here. Me and Jack say that Peter S. and Ryan Comolli packed together a shutout performance in their combined performances. These outings proved essential to the Spirit’s win.
