Spirit Try To Avoid fate Of Last Series Loser, A Sweep

The day started with 2 layers getting honored with Spirit players of the month of June. With him taking over about 5 positions, Travis Oglesby definitly deserved the Position Player Of June Award. With a 6-3 record and 3.28 ERA it’s no wonder that John Kelly got honors for the Pitcher Of June Award. Back to the game itself, after a fairly good pitcher’s duel into the 5th inning, the game turned ugly quickly for the Spirit. The Spirit started Bryan Morse (4-3, 2.41 ERA), and the Brockton Rox started Kevin Beavers (1-3, 4.40 ERA). Beavers would walk off the field victorious as the Spirit lost 8-5,the second straight loss to the Rox. The Spirit struck first, getting people on 2nd and 3rd before C Brian Lentz came up and got an RBI-1B to make it 1-0 Spirit after 1. The Rox and Spirit both got homers in the second, DH Kris Zacuto homered for the Rox and 3B Eric Storey for the Spirit. It stayed quiet for the 3rd, and the 4th saw an RBI-2B from 3B Jake Daubert to make it 2-2 at the end of 4, seeing as the Spirit bats were silenced in the bottom frame. The Rox showed off their high-powered “steroid” defense in the 5th, getting 3 runs. CF Matt Cucurullo got a single, and went on to “steal” 2nd on a TERRIBLE CALL! SS Saul Bustos reached 1B and drew in a run on an error from LF Jose Garcia, and then another one on a pick-off attempt from Bicondoa to move to 2nd. LF Guye Senjem got an RBI-1B and was followed by another hit and a walk. With the bases loaded Daubert stepped up for his AB and got HBP to walk in a run, Bocondoa then struck out RF Brad Rosenblatt for his 10th K of the game. Bicondoa went 5 full innings before Bryan Morse came in for relief, and went 3.1 innings letting Ryan McCally get the last 2 outs of the 9th. Beavers went 4.2 innings and handed it to Cook, who went 1.1, Tony Stutz, who went .2 innings, and Joey Cole, who went 1 inning, to allow only 3 runs in relief. The Rox scored 3 more times in the 9th and the Spirit scored once in the 7th and twice in the 8th to make the final a 8-5 Rox win. Today was basically dominated by Rox pitching, so I’ll hand it to them to hold one of the best teams in the league to 5 runs and 9 hits. Our pitching, which was a team 3.91 ERA and 2nd best in the league, gave the Rox 8 runs on 12 hits. Our Saturday record now drops to 8-1 while the Rox’s is now 6-4, we lead the season series 4-3. Tomorrow is a 2 PM start, and I hope the team can regroup to try to avoid the sweep. I, myself, might make it, but I’m not sure. If I show up it will most likely be after 1st pitch. Good-luck Spirit!

SPIRITFANS.BLOGSPOT.COM PLAYER OF THE GAME (1) : I vote that 3B Eric Storey get Honors here. He went 1-5, but drew in 2 runs in those 5 AB. he homered to lead-off the 2nd and got an RBI-FC in the 8th. He got more RBIs today then anyone else on the North Shore 9. Hopefully he can keep his winning ways up tomorrow.
