This time, the Spirit really did without-a-doubt clinch the best overall record in the league. Additionally, tonight's 4-1 win over the Capitales clinches at least a tie for the 2nd half title. And, as an added bonus, the Spirit's 11th win in a row ties the league record for consecutive victories. NICE!
As I mentioned in the last post, I missed the first five innings, so I don't know how the Spirit scored their first two, but North Shore carried a 2-0 lead into the 6th inning. McNamara was cruising along, but Quebec picked up consecutive singles, prompting John Kennedy to (WHOA) be proactive and pull McNamara for Dennis Robinson. Robinson got Lepine to hit into a double play to extinguish the threat.
Robinson pitched a 1-2-3 7th, but in the 8th Eddie Lantigua singled home a run to cut the lead to 2-1. The Spirit quickly re-extended their lead, though, in the 9th. Rob Fischer led off with a single. Alex Trezza followed with a sac bunt that was thrown away by the 2nd baseman, allowing Trezz to reach and moving Fischer to 3rd. Jeff Brooks got a big base hit to make it 3-1, and later in the inning Antoin Gray's sac fly scored Trezza and made it 4-1.
Kevin Fitzgerald came in and nailed down save no. 23, topping his own league record.
Burning questions!
1. I'd say best move of the game= bringing in Robinson in the 6th and worst move of the game= pinch hitting SABINO for Wishy in the 9th with the bases loaded. What do you think?
2. Player of the game? I say D-Rob (although I don't know how our offensive guys did early in the game).
Out of town>>
-Brockton & Worcester split a doubleheader, meaning Brockton gets closer (I think their magic # is 2) to clinching a playoff spot.
-Nashua is leading New Jersey in game 2 of their doubleheader after winning game 1. If they finish the job, they'll take a one game lead over Quebec in the battle for the last wild-card spot (which WILL come into play now that the Spirit are 99.9999% assured to win the 2nd half)-- update: The Jackals came back to win--salvaging their hopes & putting Quebec back in the #4 spot
-Sussex lost game 1, their 20th in a row, to New Haven, but they lead 6-0 in the 6th. Can you believe it? The streak may be finally over! Let's throw a parade! update- SUSSEX WINS!! OMFG!!

Cutters get on the board! 6-2 Sussex now in the 6th after a Horace Lawrence "THE THIRDDDD" 2rbi double.
I NEVER GET TO GO ANYWHERE GOOD.
New Haven's announcers are positively pitiful, woeful, atrocious. Wow.
The New Haven County Cutters "Its a Whole New Ballgame" song makes the "Catch the Spirit" song sound as manly and inspiring as, like, "Hail to the Victors."
Anyone else havinig trouble with the broadcast? The server must be overloaded with Sussex fans and sympathizers coming on and praying for the end of the streak.
But, it's not over! 2 straight hits for the Cutters, and...
DERRICK GIBSON AKA "BALCO" IS COMING UP TO PINCH HIT, as he had the start of the game off. WHOAAAAA.
GIBSON WHIFFS! CROWD GOING WILD IN SUSSEX
Sussex is 1 out awaay..this is truly amazing.....
IT'S over
IT'S OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I can say I've seen it all.
We can definitely take on any independent baseball team in the country right now. I'm pretty sure of that. I'd like to see how we'd match up with an AtL team. DAMMIT, WE NEED A DAMN INDYBALL WORLD SERIES.
Agreed.
With a short season, it could be done easily; and we are the best indy team in the nation, if not the world.
Right. I know it would cost money to do, but I am 1000% convinced that if they ever hatched such an idea, like, ESPN4 would cover it, giving some mucho promotion to the teams.
We could get ESPN to sponsor it maybe?. Or BUD or Chik-filet or McD's.
It's a nice thought, but it'll never happen unless one of us runs into Mark Cuban kind o' money...
Stop shattering my dreams with your pragmatism
