The North Shore Spirit continued their ferocious pace in the 2nd half on Tuesday night, using a 2nd-inning 6 run power surge to vault them to a victory in front of a large, albeit dull, crowd at Fraser. The final score was : North Shore 7, 1st base umpire Richard Katz 2, home plate umpire Derek January 1, New Jersey Jackals 1.
With the game scoreless in the 2nd, the Spirit unloaded with a 6-run barrage to run away with the game. Jared Brown had already looked shaky with 2 walks in the first. He began to really get knocked around in the 2nd. He walked two more with 1 out in the 2nd, then Ryan Bethel smashed the Spirit's first hit of the game to score their first run. Rob Fischer's 2 run single extended the lead to 3-0, then Vic Davilla smashed what proved to be the knockout blow with an absolute tremendous laser beam 3-run homer over the right field wall to make it 6-0 Spirit and chase Brown from the game.
Meanwhile, Matt Bishop was on cruise control. He only allowed 1 earned run in his 6.2 innings of work and carried a perfect game into the 5th inning, fanning 6 along the way.
With two outs in the 5th, Derek January scored his first run of the game. After Bishop walked a man to break up his string of perfection, the next batter lined out to Vic Davilla. However, catchers' interference was called on Jon de Vries. So the guy must be a pretty remarkable batter, if he can get interfered with, then still manage to smash a laser-beam and the 2nd-hardest hit ball of the night, that would have easily been a triple had not Vic Davilla been positioned perfectly to make a nice grab. I mean, it takes skills to do that since De Vries REALLY must have been in the way. So with 2 on, January loaded the bases with another catchers interference call- this time on a foul ball. This at least makes a little more sense, since it was a foul. Zach Smithlin's RBI single made the game 6-1-0-0 after that, closing January to within 5.
Old favorite Richard Katz got in on the act in the 6th, chipping away at the Spirit lead with two runs of his own. Guillermo Reyes grounded into an inning-ending double play, but Katz called him safe, despite his being out by about a step. John Lindsay followed with a 2 run bomb that valuted Katz into second base.
The Jackals picked up a run of their own and made it a bit scary in the 7th, as Jason Oompa Loomppa Tuttle's sprayed opposite field RBI single scored Clay Kuklick to plate a run. Dennis Robinson came in and put out the fire, though, keeping the score at 6-2-1-1.
Rob Fischer picked up an insurance run for the Spirit by blasting his 2nd homer of the year in the 9th inning to make the job a little easier for Kevin Fitzgerald, who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to nail down his third save in three games.
I don't really need to post many 'burning questions' about tonight, since you know where I stand about the umpiring tonight. But I will offer these:
1. With Trezza finally seeming to snap out of it with 4 hits in the Brockton series, were you surprised that de Vries got the start today?
2. WTF? Catchers interference? When the !$!@#! do we ever see THAT? @#!#@!@#@!
3. Who's #2? The Spirit have established themselves as the best team in the league right now- who poses the biggest threat to them in September?

1. Yes, and what makes that hurt even more is that de Vries had his worst game in weeks: 0-4, 2 Ks and three errors all by himself.
And back to back instances of catchers @$!@#!#@!@#ing interference. WTF?
2. See above.
3. Brockton. Not just because they scare me, but because they're the only team that has a 1-2 punch like Guy, Kelly. Nobody except maybe us has a 1-2 like that.
As JK almost got ejected for arguing; The Jackals "set up" that interference call by earlier complaining about catcher's interference during an earlier at bat, and then swang wide and late causing the so-called interference.
Sneaky little Bastards, don't trust them Jackals.
1. VERY suprised. Alex is becoming a proven leader and playing well, I don't get it.
2. Joe, You said what the @#@#!!
Te-He. See above.
3. I'll agree that Brockton matches up best vs. North shore.
However, a team like these sneaky little bastards scares me as well. They always seem to play with a major "edge" against us, I wouldn't be suprised on any given day to see a brawl with tese guys.
They may wear themselves out just trying to make the playoffs; Hell NHC may knock out Brockton.
That would be an awful shame.
The Spirit had a great outing against the Jackals in front of a zombie-like crowd tonight. What can be said about tonight that wasn't already said? Not much.
I will only add these three things...
1) Great job by Bishop tonight,we REALLY need guys like him in the playoffs and any games now that matter
2) We need to do what was done in the 2nd more....whihc is stirke hard and often.
3) These umps suck....I bet that Hellen Keller could ump a better game. 4 runs my @$$.....
Now onto the few burning questions that were put down...
1) Yeah,Trezza not in the lineup confuses me. Why put in a guy that you know isn't the best hitter and tell the guy who WANTS to,and should, play to sit on the bench?
2) WTF?!?! I didn't even think that back-to-back occurences were possible....another reason DeVries shouldn't have started.
3) Agreed about Brockton. They are a pretty scary team with that lienup, and the 1-2 punch you mentioned.
"The Jackals "set up" that interference call...."
Damn....those Jackals are sneaky little bastards. If not Brockton as #2 it'd prob be them. I was actually debating wether to put Brockton or New Jersey as number 2...
whats gonna happen when reininger comes back?
I don't think he's coming back.
JD told one of our patrons last night he'd be back on Thursday.
Yeah,he said he should be back either Thursday or Friday.....it'd be interesting to see what'd happen when he does come back. Who goes where, and who sits on the bench and all.
Who the hell can you take out of the lineup at this point? Bethel? I wouldn't. Ricardo? No way, the guy can hit. I think JD is going to be a defensive replacement from now on.

You do have a good point,we're fielding a pretty good team right now. However,if JD is ready to come back I say let him play at least 2 games to get the feel of things again....then leave him aside for a defensive sub.
