The Spirit didn't get much offense tonight, but they didn't need it, as Bryan Morse locked down the Cutters in eight scoreless innings to pick up the victory, scattering only six hits. Kevin Fitzgerald shut down New Haven in the ninth, retiring the Cutters in order to record the save.
Rob Fischer provided the only offense the Spirit needed- and, ultimately, the only real offense they got-- with a solo home run in the first inning off left handed starting pitcher Brad Whitworth. From there on, Whitworth stymied North Shore's attack, ceding only one more hit, a single to Jeff Brooks in the 2nd inning. The Spirit failed to get another hit until the ninth inning, when Vic Davilla got one off Mark Comoli to put runners on first and 2nd with nobody out. A double steal followed by a wild pitch allowed Rob Fischer to score, giving North Shore their two runs on three hits.
New Haven scrapped six hits off of Bryan Morse but were never able to crack the run column. They threatened in the first when with two outs Derrick Gibson and Horace Lawrence III both singled, but Gibson was gunned down attempting to steal third base. In the fourth, New Haven had two on with one out, but Morse induced a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Chas "I need a shave and a haircut" Terni to end the inning. From there, Morse was in cruise control, allowing only one more baserunner before turning the game over to the reliable right arm of Kevin Fitzgerald.
It was a good win for North Shore in the first game of what will be a measuring-stick road trip for the lads. New Haven is one of only two ballparks where the Spirit have an all-time losing record (the other being Brockton). They'll have a chance to reverse that curse as Game 2 of the series is tomorrow night at 7:05 PM with ( I believe ) Matt Bishop on the hill for North Shore.
Not much in the way of "burning questions" tonight, other than, WTF is wrong with our offense and what can be done about it?
P.S.: Yale Field has to be the shittiest, bush-leaguiest place I've ever seen in my life. I'll give examples and pictures at some point during this mini-vacation of mine.
Oh, and also, the cool thing was, the whole 1st base side was DOMINATED by Spirit fans and staff. It was great! More to come as the week progresses.

"lovely" new haven sure is enjoyable *roll eyes.*
Well, I like the area I'm in... I'm staying in Killingworth, CT with Grant (tonythetiger20), which is about a half hour from the ballpark.
New Haven itself is gahhh-bage.
I think tomorrow I'm gonna run by the press box and yell BENOIT EMOND EST L'HOMME
