There is some sort of curse on North Shore closers that make you think they're awesome early, but they melt down and suck once we get closer and closer to the playoffs... Bic in 04, McCally in 05 and now Fitzgerald in 06.
I tuned into today's game for the first time in the bottom of the 9th with the Spirit holding a healthy 6-2 lead. Fitzgerald came in to close it out. I figured I'd listen to the last three outs and post about the victory and any details Leahy mentions in the postgame. But Fitzgerald proceeded to load the bases with 1 out, then walk a man to make it 6-3....
With the bases still loaded, Fitzy was pulled in favor of Dennis Robinson... who struck out Agramonte, then got Bobby Lenore to chop a grounder to 2nd, but somehow Lenore beat the throw to first, allowing another run to score. D-Rob walked the next man to make it 6-5 with the bases still loaded, bringing up old nemesis Elvis Corporan.
I'm listening to Corporan's at-bat now, praying D-Rob can close it out...............................
Foul after foul after foul with the count 1 ball and 2 strikes........... anoooooother foul, 4 in a row.... AND HE STRUCK HIM OUT SWINGING. THANK JESUS CHRIST
The very good news: Shawn McNamara pitched very well to earn his 2nd win.
It's nice to have two wins in a row... but sheesh this bullpen meltdown was troubling.

deStiff went 1-2 , worked 2 walks and threw out 2 attempting to steal.

I'll chalk it up to
1) Sussex pitching sucks
2) Marcos Agramonte (one of the guys he gunned), despite all his speed, is a poor baserunner. He never seemed to get a jump at a good time, and as you mentioned his speed from a complete stop at 1st wasn't as good as his out-of-the-box speed
I hope Younare right Benoit; they better start with the cutters
I'm with you benny boy. I'm very optimistic about this team right now- but a little nervous about Fitzy.
