It got a bit testy in the 9th, but Kevin Fitzgerald shut the door for his second save in as many nights as North Shore beat Sussex 6-3 in front of 3,083 at the Fraze. Matt Bishop pitched seven impressive innings to get his first win as a starter. The Spirit remain 1/2 game behind Quebec for the 2nd-half lead and retain their first-place overall record in the league. They go for the sweep tomorrow at 2:05.
The win was marred, though, by BJ Weed's injury. As one would expect, he got his injury on a hustle play- he somehow hurt his leg running hard down the line on a groundball that turned into a hit (typical poor Sussex fielding). I'm no doctor but to me it looked like one of those injuries that hurt really bad at the time but won't be a real long term thing, it will just be cured with some rest. Let's hope so. Maybe a day off tomorrow, the team's offday the next day, and he's back.
With Weed out the Spirit had to try an odd defensive lineup:
Davilla-Fischer-Sabino
Brown-Rowan-Bethel-Brooks
Trezza,
which needless to say was not exactly gold-glove caliber defense out there.
Sussex took the early 2-0 lead but three errors and a Spirit offensive explosion in the 6th led to the Spirit victory. Chris Rowan and Alex Trezza drove in runs to tie the game at 2 in the bottom of the 1st. It remained 2-2 until BJ Weed's RBI single scored a run in the 5th. The Spirit exploded to put it out of the reach the next inning. Ryan Bethel and BJ Weed got two-out RBI hits (Weed's hit was the play he got hurt on) to extend the lead to 6-2. Sussex scored an unearned run off Tim Dugan in the 8th, but Fitzy got the shaky save in the 9th.

This was a pretty good job,and besides the error by Brown, the setup after Weed was out worked out pretty well. I doubt we will win the second half, but keeping the best overall record does show we're still very kickass. I also doubt that BJ will be out for long, his injury doesn't look very servere and should be back in a day or two (not counting today). Also, kudos to Bishop. I didn't expect him to do as well as he did, especially with his first inning of work. He did exceptionally well and Rival/Fitzy were great to end the game.
I will say this though, this wasn't something we've been witness to a whole lot this year, this game was just a little over 3 hours long. Tonight's game was 3:04 long, the last 3+ hour game was back on July 10th Vs (who else) Sussex,a 3:07 affair. Only nine other games have been more than 3 hours long, with the exception of that double-header that won us the 1st half. With most games getting done in about 2 1/2 hours I'd say I'm pretty happy with game times this year. ^_^
Cya'll there tomorrow.
