Sweeping success

West Haven, CT- One part of the script from the past two nights at Yale Field changed tonight: The Spirit got offense early, putting up four runs on nine hits against the Cutters. But another part remained the same: North Shore got high quality pitching from starter Matt Bishop, who yielded only one unearned run on four hits in seven innings, and relievers Kevin Rival and Kevin Fitzgerald who pitched the Spirit to the 4-1 victory over the now-reeling Cutters in front of a sizable (by New Haven standards) crowd at Yale Field. It's the Spirit's first ever sweep at New Haven and their sixth win in a row.

In the third, the Spirit started the scoring. After Rob Fischer and Vic Davilla reached on a walk and an error (one of 4 Cutters errors on the night), newcomer Ricardo Cordova, recently arrived from Worcester, laced a single for his first Spirit hit and RBI to put the boys up 1-0. The next man, Jeff Brooks, reached on Chas Terni's error, allowing Davilla to come in the back door and make it 2-0.

An RBI double by Marcus Nettles closed the gap in the 5th inning to 2-1. The Cutters loaded the bases off of Matt Bishop, but the Spirit got out of the jam on a nice play at the hot corner by tonight's third baseman, Ryan Bethel. From there, Bishop was nearly untouchable, giving up just one hit over his last two innings of work.

The Spirit offense made sure it was comfortable for the bullpen, putting up two more runs in the sixth inning. Ryan Bethel and Luis Sabino led the inning off with back-to-back RBI doubles to make it 3-1. Sabino would score on Vic Davilla's RBI single to cap the scoring at 4-1.

Tonight's player of the game is 'the new guy,' Ricardo Cordova, acquired from Worcester today. He went 2-4 with a stolen base and an RBI, along with several stellar defensive plays including the one that led to the final out. A nod also goes to Luis Sabino, who smashed two hits, scored a run and stole a base. Andrew Wishy continued his recent uptick, going 2-5.

Notes/comments
~With the acquisition of Cordova and a rest night for Trezza, the D looked different tonight:
C: De Vries
IF L-R: Bethel, Rowan, Cordova, Davilla
OF L-R: Sabino, Fischer, Wishy
DH: Brooks.

-I REALLY like this defensive lineup for the Spirit. Davilla's in his right spot at 1st, Brooks is in his right spot at DH, and Bethel looked right at home @ 3rd base. The first impression tells me that Cordova is slick at 2nd, and Chris Rowan is an absolutely TREMENDOUS shortstop- he made two more highlight reel plays tonight. Sabino and Fisch are awesome outfielders. The defense was pretty much awesome tonight.

-Speaking of which, that Rowan trade is looking good at the moment- this guy has been HUGE since coming back.

-It was incredibly, incredibly sweet to get the sweep at New Haven to start this big road trip.

-I have some pictures of Yale Field, but I forgot to bring my cord to CT that I need to hook up the camera- I'll do it when I get home tomorrow.

-Props to New Haven- with the exception of a few people who indulged a bit too much in 'Dollar beer night,' the fans and the staff were quite kind and receptive to us. The crowd was fairly big tonight, and they made a lot of noise in support of their team... until the Spirit knocked their candy-asses out.

Why is Alex Trezza not playing???

not sure, anon. although it was nice having him on the bench if we needed him. It did allow us to shuffle the defense quite well, moving devries out of the DH hole so brooks could get in there and open a spot in the infield, opening the floodgates for a boatload of changes, and allowing for a SOLID defensive allignment.

i feel like im channelling joe here. lol.

although, now that i think about it, trezza could have started and devries could have been on the bench, theres a 50 point batting average swing there.

if i were to guess, i would just say it was to give trez a day off.

mind IDing urself? no biggie if u dont.

I'm the biggest Trezza fan you'll find (except possibly my girlfriend), but the guy has been STRUGGLING and could use a day off..or two. It's not just his offense, it's his defense that's been lagging, too- which, to me, is a sign of fatigue.
