The Spirit have their man: former Newark Bears pitching coach Pete Filson.
Like Jeff Ware, Filson's a veteran guy. He pitched in the major leagues, then went on to coach in multiple organizations before becoming Newark's pitching coach for 4 years. Now he's on his way to the Spirit.
This seems like a good hire as Filson's a veteran guy and Vic Davilla speaks very confidently about him.
One thing that concerns me: last year Newark's staff went 42-83 with a 5.85 ERA. Still, there's only so much you can do with bad players.

And it could be a money thing, Benny- although lately I'd doubt the Spirit are outbidding anyone.
I am T.J. Shimizu
I think the advantage(s) Filson, or a guy like him brings to the SPIRIT is the big league "reach". A younger guy may have the fire, as You say B.E., but experience in different Major League organizations, farm & Instructional leagues is invaluable. The number of players that he has seen, or has friends and contacts of perhaps thirty years that have seen or worked with exponentially has to be ENORMOUS.
Think of the potential for player procurement with those kinds of resources.
There still, as far as I know, is no substitute for experience.
player procurement is big but more important is the MLB experience, if only because it gives him instant cache and respect.
sounds like a good pick to me
I'm thinkin' we may see Vic coaching 3rd himself; he would certainly have the option I would think.
With Filson and the next days' starter tracking the opposing hurler's, why couldn't he be out in the third base box?.
I was going to post numbers on the Brocktonians, but the Golden League is glorified Legion ball
and that's using a very loose definition of Glorified
