Spirit Win One In 9th Thanks To Newcomer Down In CT

Tonight was a well-earned win for the boys. I tuned in for the last inning of the game. Sounds like the Spirit did well down in New Haven. Just a reminder,Joe is in New Haven along with Grant until Wednesday I'm sure he'll have some stuff to write when he returns. ;-]
We won in the 9th thanks to a newcomer to the Spirit--below is the game post by John Leahy from the Spirit's official site, read on for more info.:

Newcomer John Welch squeezed home the winning run in the top of the ninth inning and Dennis Robinson pitched eight strong innings to lead the North Shore Spirit to a 4-2 win over the New Haven County Cutters at Yale Field in West Haven, CT. in game one of a four game series.

It was a classic pitchers duel, as it turned out, between Dennis Robinson and Rolando Valles. New Haven broke on top in the bottom of the first inning with a pair of runs in the first as Ervin Alcantara tripled and came home on an Henri Stanley sacrifice fly. Jeremy Pickrel then reached on a bunt single and moved up on a Junior Zamora single. Chas Terni then ripped an RBI single for a 2-0 lead.

The Spirit would tie it at 2-2 in the third. Gilbert Gil and B.J. Weed led with back to back singles. Two outs later, Luis Lopez and and Alex Trezza stroked consecutive RBI singles to knot the score. The game stayed that way until the ninth. Alex Trezza legged out a clutch infield single and moved up on a Josue Lopez base knock. Allen Mottram sacrificed the runners up and then John Welch, in his first game with the Spirit, laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt to force in Trezza. Gilbert Gil then reached on an infield hit to score the insurance run and make it 4-2.

Robinson went eight innings, allowing ten hits, walking one and fanning one. Derek Drage pitched the ninth to earn his fifth save.

Game two is Tueday night at 7:05, and Ryan Bicondoa will oppose Brad Whitworth. Game time is at 7:05 and can be heard live on 1510 the Zone and at
