Spirit Rally Unable To Defeat New Haven

Today the game down in New Haven was at 11 in the morning....and sicne i was at work I didn't get a chance to listne to the game. Joe is supposed to be back tonight.....so I'm sure he'll have something to say about these past three games when he posts later.

In the meantime....here's the game recap from the Spirit's official site.
Jeremy Pickrel doubled home Henri Stanley with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning and the New Haven County Cutters withstood a furious comeback by the Spirit, defeating the Spirit 9-8 in game three of their series at Yale Field in West Haven, CT.

The game was scoreless going to the bottom of the third, as the Cutters got on the scoreboard first. With one out, Ervin Alcantara singled and was forced by Henri Stanley. Jeremy Pickrel was then hit by a pitch, and Junior Zamora homered off of Spirit starter Joey Siak to stake the Cutters to a 3-0 lead.

North Shore broke onto the scoreboard in the fourth. Jerson Perez doubled with one out and advanced to third on an Allen Mottram single. John Welch's double plated Perez with the first run. Luis Lopez connected for his first home run as a member of the Spirit to make it a 3-2 ballgame in the fifth.

New Haven would answer with an Henri Stanley home run in the bottom half of the frame to extend the lead back to 4-2. The Cutters then added four more runs in the sixth frame. Matt Hackney tripled leading off and was singled in by Matt Mercurio to make it 5-2 .Ervin Alcantara and Henri Stanley then reached on consecutive singles to load the bases. Jeremy Pickrel singled to make it 6-2, and after Junior Zamora grounded out into a 6-2-3 double play, Chas Terni roped a two run double to extend the advantage to 8-2.

The Spirit began their comeback in the seventh inning . Gary Roche singled and went to third on a Mike Torres double. Luis Lopez grounded back to the mound, with the run scoring. The red, white, and blue then mounted a furious rally in the top of the eighth to tie the game. Josue Lopez led with a walk and Allen Mottram followed suit. After a strikeout of John Welch, Joe Hough smacked a ground ball to third, and the Cutters cut down the run at the plate. Gary Roche then walked to load the bases, setting the stage for two big hits. Mike Torres cracked a double to plate two runs and bring the Spirit back to within three at 8-5, and then Luis Lopez capped the monster comeback with an opposite field home run, his second of the day and his third, fourth, and fifth RBI's on the day to tie it at 8-8.

The see-saw affair then saw New Haven County push the eventual winning run across in the bottom of the eighth. Spirit reliever Julio Soriano (0-1) walked the leadoff man, Ervin Alcantara. Henri Stanley forced him at second, and then Jeremy Pickrel doubled to left center field, with Stanley scampering around to score the winning run.

Andy Weimer closed it out for the Cutters, retiring the Spirit in order in the ninth for the save. Joey Siak started for the Spirit, allowing a season-high thirteen hits on eight runs over five innings. Soriano, Donny Langdon, and Jamie Baker finished up.

The Spirit will look to take three out of four as they wrap up the series on Thursday night here against the Cutters, as Matthew Bishop will take the mound against Bucky Kosyk of New Haven County.
