Quebec 3B Eddie Lantigua and North Shore RHP Ryan Bicondoa were chosen by SportsTicker, the Can-Am League’s official statistician, as Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 6-June 12.
Lantigua, who was also named Player of the Week May 26-30, went 9-for-24 with four home runs and 12 RBI as the Capitales went 5-1 on the week. The Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, native punished New Jersey in a doubleheader on Tuesday, going 4-for-7 with three home runs and five RBI during the two games.
Lantigua, a 31-year-old from Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, is in his 14th season of professional baseball. He spent parts of three seasons in the Dodgers’ system after being signed as a free agent in 1991. The Dodgers traded him to the Indians in 1994; he’s also played for teams affiliated with the Pirates, Marlins and Cubs. He also spent time with Sioux Falls, Fargo-Moorhead, Duluth-Superior and Waterbury of the Northern League. This is Lantigua’s second stint with the Capitales; he played there when they were with the Northern League in 1999 and 2002, and when they were with the Northeast League in 2003 and 2004. Last year with Quebec he set career highs in walks (38) and homers (18) in just 91 games.
Bicondoa was excellent in his only outing of the week, throwing a seven-inning shutout in a rain-shortened affair against New Haven County on Wednesday, allowing three hits and striking out seven. After two starts and a 2-0 record, opponents are hitting a paltry .154 against the Riverton, Wyoming, native.
The righthander was signed as a nondrafted free agent by the New York Yankees and spent the 2002 season at Staten Island of the New York-Penn League, where he led the league with a 1.90 ERA and was named to the league’s post-season all-star team. Bicondoa, 26, started the 2003 season at class A Tampa before being traded to the New York Mets organization in the deal that brought Armando Benitez to the Yankees. Last season, his first in independent baseball, he finished second in the Northeast League in saves for North Shore, going 1-5 with a 4.54 ERA.
