The Spirit captured a victory tonight, finally closing out a game that was theirs ,winning on the road in New Haven by a score of 6-2. Starter Jake Mullis shined in the victory pitching a complete game and allowing just 2 runs, 1 of them earned, in the victory which pushes the Spirit to 13-12 on the season thus far.
The Spirit struck first in the 2nd inning. Travis Oglesby walked to lead it off. Brian Macchi followed him up with a single. When Alex Trezza and Andy Howdeshell popped out and struck out, respectively, it looked like the Spirit would have another squander. But up stepped Stephen Carter- he smacked a 2 RBI double to give the Spirit the early lead.
In the 5th, the Spirit tacked on a few more. Carter and Macchi in front of Rob Fischer, who hit a triple to score them both. Vic Davilla followed them with an RBI single to make it 5-0 Spirit. All looked well- it was smooth sailing, right?
Wrong- New Haven County made it scary again. In the 6th, with Jake Peavey on 2nd base, Brooks hit an RBI double. The next man, Turney, grounded it to Howdeshell, who botched the ball and threw it away to score Brooks and make it 5-2.
The Spirit would get some vital insurance, however. Travis Oglesby ripped his 8th homer ball of the year, a solo shot in the 7th, to ice it 7-2.
Mullis closed it out to finish the complete game and pick up the win.
The Spirit and the Cutters play in the rubber match tomorrow afternoon at 2:05.
