Rock Bottom

Spirit Killed Again

In yet another disgraceful performance by the freefalling North Shore Spirit, the Brockton Rox throttled the Spirit 14-5, disgracing the team and getting much of the crowd of about 2900 to first hoot on them and then eventually turn on them as fans exited early and many who remained rooted for Brockton.

The only real highlight for the Spirit were three late home runs (Garret Weir, Travis Oglesby and Vic Davilla provided the pop) and 2 solid innings pitched with 2 ER by Catcher-turned-DH-turned-Pitcher Travis Oglesby late in the game. Other than that, it was just plain UGLY. So ugly that I once again tore up my scorecard.

Wayne Hedden (WHY) started the game (if this is any indication we are SCREWED come Live 8 weekend in the 6 game set vs Quebec) and proceeded to get lit up giving up 6 runs in 2 2/3 innings. Mark Comolli did no better and Brockton extended the lead. The Spirit couldn't muster a run til the 7th when Garret Weir broke the shutout with a solo HR but the one-dimensional offense continued to be just that as all of the Spirit's runs came by way of the HR. They were never able to string rallies together and just about every hit came with 2 outs. Thus the Spirit although picking up a solid 12 hits on the night never made any of them of importance.

Tomorrow night the Spirit look to pick up the pieces and get their tail out from between their legs as they resume their series with the Rox, with Quebec fading further and further into the distance and dreams of a Can Am league championship that were 2 weeks ago dancing in the heads of Spirit fans now seeming like a faint, faint possibility.

Of course anything is possible in baseball, especially in the independent leagues, so it's possible for the Spirit to turn it around. But they can't continue like this for too long. It's time for some changes. Big turnaround, or big changes. One or the other. Let's hope for the former; if not, the latter had best happen soon.
