Spirit Swept by Tornadoes

In what was a must-sweep series by the North Shore Spirit last night, the tables were turned, and the Worcester Tornadoes came out of last night with two victories and left the Spirit further demoralized and deflated before they return home to Fraser Field tonight for a date with the Brockton Rox. In the first game of the doubleheader, the Tornadoes edged the Spirit 5-4 in an extra-innings heartbreaker, while in the second game, the Spirit could do nothing, as Alex Pena came within one out of a perfect game in Worcester's 6-0 victory. Comolli was the loser in game 1; Soteropoulos got the loss in game 2.

In game 1, it looked good early for the Spirit as the one-dimensonal offense succeeded at its one dimension. Brian Macchi and Eric Storey ripped back to back home runs in the 2nd to give the Spirit the 2-0 lead. In the 3rd, Rob Fischer tacked one on with a solo blast of his own to make it 3-0.

Worcester struck back in the 4th. Jamie Brown hit a leadoff triple; an RBI groundout by Zach Strong scored him to cut it to 3-1. In the 5th, Abraham Nunez started it off with a single; Lucas Taylor then smacked a triple to chase starter Jake Mullis from the game and scorea run, making in 3-2. the Spirit's newest pitcher, Alex Harrera, came into the game next and proceeded to get 4 strikeouts to preserve the lead.

In the 7th, the Spirit tacked on a crucial insurance run as Macchi was hit by a pitch, sacrificed to 2nd by Storey, and singled home by Weir, giving the Spirit their 2-run cushion.

But it was not to be. In the bottom of the 7th, Spirit closer Ryan McCally proceeded to give up 2 runs, and in the bottom of the 9th, Yohanny Valera's sac fly with the bases loaded off of Wayne Hedden ended the game and Worcester won 5-4.

Game 2 was a pure trouncing, as the Tornadoes scored 5 in the 1st and 1 in the 6th off of Soteropoulos and never looked back. The Spirit's first baserunner came with 2 out in the 7th as Davilla and Oglesby walked; Macchi singled to break up the no hitter but Storey followed him with a flyout to end it.
