Spirit sweep:
Pretty much all you need to know about the offense in today's 3-0 North Shore win over Sussex is that there wasn't any. All three Spirit runs scored in bizzare ways as Joey Siak stymied the hapless Skyhawks in a 3-hit shutout on a gloriously beautiful afternoon at Fraser Field.
The Spirit put two on the board with hustle plays in the 3rd. With runners on 1st and 3rd, the catcher Jason Alcott made a wild throw trying to gun down a runner stealing 2nd, allowing a run to score and putting North Shore on top. Luis Sabino then scored on Vic Davilla's RBI groundout. Jeff Brooks had the hardest hit of the day in the 7th inning, scorching a double; he eventually scored on a wild pitch.
The story was Siak. He carried a no-hitter into the 5th - what's with Spirit lefties and Sunday afternoons? Siak's win makes him 5-6 on the season, but in reality he's been much better than that. Sussex's loser Mike Greenhouse had nothing to be ashamed of, pitching 6.1 strong innings of his own. It was simply Siak's day- he's the undisputed player of the game.
Offensive highlights were few and far between: The only real hard hit for the Spirit came off the bat of Jeff Brooks in the 7th. Rob Fischer also had a single. Jon de Vries worked two walks. On the down side, Alex Trezza went 0-4 with the Golden Sombrero- 4 Ks.
Still, it's hard to be negative about ANYTHING with the Spirit now 16-4 in their past 20 home games. Pissah!
BURNING QUESTIONS
1. WTF can be done about Trezza's strikeouts?
2. Do you think the offense is going to struggle like they did today without BJ Weed, or will everyone else be able to pick up the slack?
3. How bad do you think Sussex will do the rest of the season?
4. Any predictions for this big 6-game swing against the iron of the league?

1. Unfortunately it goes hand in hand with his power surge. If he keeps leading the league in HR and hitting a respectable .260+, I'll deal with the Ks. But it can get frustrating, I'll tell ya'.
2. It's really going to hurt because of the way we've been playing ball. We've been back to the '03 style of hustling around the bases, taking 2 bases on groundouts, breaking for home on passed balls, etc etc. - and BJ Weed is perfect for that style of play. But the addition of Rob Fischer is going to be really really huge in Weed's absence because Fischer is AS GOOD in center and a bit better at the plate than Weed.
3. Pitiful, especially when Marcos and today's starting pitcher go to the Jackals for a 9th round pick in teh CanAm league draft

Thanks for the post Joe.
I waited and got impatient, explaining my kinda' ~ LAME~ post on top; My bad.
1. FRUSTRATING is right, I agree.
2. Big time hurt as he could easily have moved to 2nd or third putting #10 in the DH slot: read great idea.
3. Really piss-poor, can't believe we're gonna miss the bus...... again.

When I think of smart comments I Blogg-Em
The offense is funked please DeFog EM
Hope they hear what we say
They Don't know how to play
If they don't learn real soon we will Flog-Em
1) It IS sort of frustrating with all the K's he's had,but with they way he's produced I'll deal with those.
2) Defense will stay the same, but noone can really hit and hustle the way BJ has ALL season. With that gone from our lineup we are a little screwed. I have faith that someone will pick up the slack or someone will come in and pick it up.
3) *fails at life music*
4) I also think we'll split the road trip and go 3-3.
Hope to see everyone Friday at Fraser and Saturday at Brockton! ^_^
